James E. Martin began his association with dance in Grand Rapids, Michigan under the direction of former Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo soloist, Ms Sally Seven.  After 3 years of study, he was awarded a full stipend scholarship at the renowned Dance Theatre Of Harlem, directed by Mr. Arthur Mitchell and Mr. Karel Shook, where he was trained in Ballet, African, Modern, and Jazz.  In honor of these techniques, he now refers to his own individual style and teaching technique as Balafromojazz.  Mr. Martin has been a member of the Charles Moore Dance Theatre, The Alfred Gallman Newark Dance Theatre, The Linea Dance Company, The Fred Benjamin Dance Company, and the Boulder Ballet.  Mr. Martin has also performed with and choreographed for Dance Art Stuttgart, which he and former Maurice Bejart Prima Ballerina, Ms. Hitomi Asakawa, co-founded in 1995, in Stuttgart, Germany where he lived for 10 years, and met his wife of 15 years, international Ballerina Lucia Hutchins.  For nearly 30 years now, Mr. Martin has trained students who have gone on to become members of dance companies, and theater productions across the globe.  He has taught master classes and choreographed for dance companies in the

U. S., Canada, Europe, and Israel and is currently teaching at Hearts in Step Christian Dance Academy and is Director of H.I.S. Dance Ensemble in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Lucia Martin, formerly Hutchins, is a native of St. Petersburg, Florida.  She began her dance training at the age of 10 upon a dare of one of her childhood friends.  Her dance teacher Susanne Pomerantzeff immediately gave her a full scholarship.  At the age of 15, still under the direction of Ms. Pomerantzeff, she won the state competition for the “Arts and Letters Association” and in the same year was awarded a full stipend scholarship to study and perform with the San Francisco Ballet School under the direction of Michael Smuin.  Upon the completion of her studies at San Francisco, and 1 year into a 4 year scholarship at the University of Utah, she was offered a professional contract to perform in Europe. At the age of 19 she was promoted to principal dancer and performed the lead roles in ballets such as “Romeo & Juliet”, “Giselle”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Dracula”, “Nutcracker”, etc… in European companies for 14 years.  She continued her professional career as principal dancer with David Taylor Dance Theater, Boulder Ballet, and Israeli Ballet. For 20 years, Mrs. Martin has been a superb instructor and coach in classical ballet, with a strong emphasis on proper technique and injury prevention.  Her training and inspiration has forged professional careers for her students, nationally and internationally.  She currently heads the Pre-Professional Division at Hearts in Step Christian Dance Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is Ballet Mistress for H.I.S. Dance Ensemble.  She resides with her husband of 15 years, Balafromojazz instructor and choreographer, James E. Martin, in Michigan.
