Lucia Martin

Lucia Martin, formerly Hutchins, is a native of St. Petersburg, Florida.  She began her dance training at the age of 10 upon a dare of one of her childhood friends.  Her dance teacher Susanne Pomerantzeff immediately gave her a full scholarship.  At the age of 15, still under the direction of Ms. Pomerantzeff, she won the state competition for the “Arts and Letters Association” and in the same year was awarded a full stipend scholarship to study and perform with the San Francisco Ballet School under the direction of Michael Smuin.  Upon the completion of her studies at San Francisco, and 1 year into a 4 year scholarship at the University of Utah, she was offered a professional contract to perform in Europe. At the age of 19 she was promoted to principal dancer and performed the lead roles in ballets such as “Romeo & Juliet”, “Giselle”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Dracula”, “Nutcracker”, etc… in European companies for 14 years.  She continued her professional career as principal dancer with David Taylor Dance Theater, Boulder Ballet, and Israeli Ballet. For 20 years, Mrs. Martin has been a superb instructor and coach in classical ballet, with a strong emphasis on proper technique and injury prevention.  Her training and inspiration has forged professional careers for her students, nationally and internationally.  She currently heads the Pre-Professional Division at Hearts in Step Christian Dance Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is Ballet Mistress for H.I.S. Dance Ensemble.  She resides with her husband of 15 years, Balafromojazz instructor and choreographer, James E. Martin, in Michigan.
